bye bye hippo

Lately I’ve been working on a series of urns based on the narrative of whom or what could be contained inside. Here is a hippopotamus urn I’ve been working on, to clarify it is not an urn for a hippopotamus (I love hippos). The detail is a pattern made of “no diving” warning signs and the knob is a winged hourglass that symbolizes death and reminds the viewer that their time is coming (especially if you go swimming with hippos).

the forever pot

It’s always a good feeling to finish a project, especially this one, for some reason this pot took me forever to finish. Granted I do work extremely slow, but come on, I started it way back when Heath was my studio mate! Slowly but surely it started to fall behind on the priorities list (right after popping balloons) so I decided, after a long game of balloon popping, to buck up and finish this pot and what do you know 2 weeks later it’s done.

Two mugs and a bowl

A couple of mugs with a heavy textured pattern for the wood fire

And a bowl that I plan on making a mold from

the end.

Oh yeah, I have a blog

Considering that I was a stay at home dad by day and a part-time sales associate at the dollar tree by night this summer (don’t even think about stealing my movie idea Hollywood!) , I feel like what little time I spent at the studio was productive. I was able to make some molds and quite a few pots.

Here are some mugs, the cups are casts from a mold I made this summer and the handles are pulled and attached afterward. Another good thing about casting is I have plenty of opportunities to ruin the mugs with bad handles before I get it right, that is if I ever get it right.

Here is a crazy pitcher I made by taking two failed projects, combining them to make a third slightly less, but maybe shamefully more of a failed project, but at least I have something to show for all the time and effort put into it.

Odd idea

One long night I was thinking of a way to make a left handed mug, don’t ask me why, I was very tired. But this is what I came up with, if you try to drink out of this mug with your right hand the drawer will slid out.

Sometimes you just have to try

Finish it!

This is what I came up with for the exchange. I had a hard time dealing with high iron clay bodies so everything came out brown. Not what I expected, but it was a good learning experience and a fun project.

All right

OK it looks just like the old spout, but I can assure you it’s a new one. Lets hope this one does not crack.

Finished; or is it?

NO

I thought I was done with this ewer, but the spout cracked so I had to remove it and make a new one.

Study in form

I threw these with the intent to evolve the form. I was wondering if you could guess the order in which I threw them and which one if any you like best.

art swap

Well it’s time to blog and I don’t have much to blog about so here is a picture of the three works I got for the art swap. I’ve made a few changes already and hope no one minds, but if you do I don’t care.

I know that this has nothing to do with ceramics, but its way to cool not to post!

First pot of the semester

I know most of you saw this the other day in class, but now I’m done working on it, and it’s always a nice feeling to finish something.
